Deadly Duos
We are looking to combine the skill and precision of our sweatiest comrades with the violent fervour and whimsy of newer players, returning players, and long-time casual blasters.
Each team will consist of one decorated veteran of many wars, and one veteran of somewhat fewer wars.
The aim is simple: blast, learn, have fun, and create at least one story worth retelling. Elements of silliness are actively welcome.
Format
This is a 2-player team event made up of two simultaneous 1v1 games.
Players can self identify as VETERAN, or RISING STAR on a poll in our discord. This will be used as a guide to gauge attendance then teams will be decided based on what the organisers believe to be the fairest split. Any obvious trolling and we will consider personal nerfs.
Your doubles partner does not join your killzone, but your results contribute to your shared team score. Spin the boards to ensure you can game side-by-side and hold hands if you wish. Teams remain unchanged throughout the event. Discussing strategy is fine but do so appropriately, no directions, no backseat gaming. Aim is to develop FUNdamentals, and learn together.
Each round will use:
- 1 Open killzone
- 1 Close Quarters killzone
- Approved Ops
- 4 possible Crit Ops
- Light WTC-inspired drafting
- Optional narrative Wildcards
Each killzone will have 2 associated Crit Ops, creating a pool of 4 options.
Round Set-Up
- Teams roll off to determine Attacker and Defender.
- The Defenders decide who is playing whom, and ban 1 Crit Op from the pool.
- The Attackers decide which pairing plays on which killzone, and ban 1 Crit Op from the pool.
- The 2 remaining Crit Ops are randomly assigned to the 2 killzones.
- Players select operatives.
- Players select equipment.
- If all 4 players unanimously agree, draw a Wildcard.
Awards
- Best Theme: Judged on paired concept, narrative link, visual identity, ridiculous duo energy, and overall commitment to the bit.
- Big money ballers – highest scoring team
- Couples therapy voucher - last place, awarded with love
- Best Painted (combined)
Wildcards
Wildcards are optional narrative modifiers, and will be available as cards to draw at random. They may introduce a strange battlefield effect, alter a universal equipment option, change how a terrain feature behaves, or add a small extra twist to the round.
They should be simple, funny, and playable — enough to make the game memorable, without turning it into a rules argument. If agreed to be completely game-breaking due to an interaction with a zesty rule, grow up and draw another.
Think teleporting smoke, suspicious ladders, mines behaving badly, unstable doors, experimental barricades, roomba mines, accidental psychic awakenings, or other battlefield nonsense.
The spirit is: if everyone at the table laughs and agrees, it goes in.
